Event Dates - 2024

The 2024 National Black Book Festival was held in Houston, California from Thursday, October 17-19, 2024. I had the absolute pleasure of attending. It was the seventeenth anniversary of the Festival, which was held at Fallbrook Church in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Highlights of the Festival included seminars on various aspects of book publishing and writing, including a seminar on taking a book from publication to film. I also had the opportunity to meet many of the 150 authors, publishers, and agents. Finally,

I met many readers who bought copies of my books An American Daughter of Brown as well as Cuba's Guarded Promise: A Snapshot  of a Country on the Cusp of Enormous Change. I found the purchasers were very excited about both books and they asked a great deal of stimulating and insightful questions. Meeting potential readers fact-to-face is always a highlight of any event I attend.

Organizers of the Festival Gwen Richardson and Dr. Rhonda Lawson interviewed me regarding my historical novel An American Daughter of Brown. The interview lasted a half hour. The mp4 recording is attached to this website below.

On October 26, 2024, I presented my book An American Daughter of Brown to members of a book club in Atlanta, Georgia. It was held at The Corner Grille, a Black-owned restaurant in the College Park section of Atlanta. We feasted on a scrumptious brunch with dishes such as baked trout and grits; fried oysters; chicken and waffles; and crab omelettes with grits or potatoes. There was also a wonderful dessert menu.

The women at the brunch/meeting had outstanding professional careers, which included a gynecologist, two attorneys and others who had very demanding positions at the top of their fields. All of the women participated actively in the discussion of the book and were anxious to know whether there would be a sequel. We also discussed the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education, which is the point of departure of the book, and delved into the topic of public education before and after the Brown decision and whether or not public education in America improved for Blacks when Brown was implemented. Underlying the discussion was the query, "how far have we really come?"

Bay Area Book Festival - June 2024

On June 2, 2024, I exhibited my book An American Daughter of Brown at the Bay Area Book Festival in the MLK Civic Center Park in Berkeley, CA. It was extremely well attended and the weather was absolutely gorgeous! I also sold my previous book Cuba's Guarded Promise: A Snapshot of a Country on the Cusp of Enormous Change, which I published in 2016, when Barack Obama's administration was beginning to lift some of the U.S. embargoes and just before the Trump Administration  overturned many of those actions. The public at the Fair was interested in that small window of time and the direction in which this country could have gone. Both books sold extremely well at the Fair .  The following photos commemorate that event:

Book Signing for New Release - An American Daughter of Brown

On October 24, 2021, Dr. Nevada Harris, a physician in the Greater KansasCity Area, graciously hosted a book signing event for me. I wanted to begin my tour in Kansas City because the Midwest is where the Brown v. Board of Education plaintiffs were from. It is also the setting of much of the novel.

Among those present were Phyllis Stevens, former acting Superintendant of Schools for the Kansas City, Missouri School District; Hon. Jon Gray, retired judge of the Jackson County Superior Court; Joy Pearson, DVM and other educators and community leaders.
